Every day of the week we have organized our tours and outings to introduce you to the city’s sights through the eyes of a New Yorker, and every evening there are activities and events to entertain you and help you meet other travelers (as well as experience the city without even leaving the neighborhood!) Let us show you why WE LOVE NY!
Daytime Walking Tours
Our daily walking tours give you the opportunity to see the city through the eyes of a local and learn about NYC’s rich history and culture. Perfect for those who want to see something off the beaten track after seeing all the major attractions!
What You Need to Do for All Tours
- Sign up on the tour board in the lobby: please note that tours will be cancelled if there are not at least 5 people signed up and ready to go on the tour.
- Bring Metrocard for the subway ($2.50 per one way ride and $30 for a weekly subway Metrocard).
- Meet in the lobby at the start time for all tours.
- Note any other special instructions on the signup sheet on the tour board in the lobby.
- For groups of 10 or more, please e-mail email@example.com to confirm in advance.
ED’S BROOKLYN TOUR (10:00am, 4 hrs., $10, All Ages): Take a trip to one of New York’s coolest boroughs. Brooklyn has been growing in popularity over the past few years. See one of NYC’s most vibrant borough with neighborhoods such as Williamsburg, Brooklyn Heights, and DUMBO. Come along and discover Brooklyn
GREENWICH VILLAGE TOUR: Punk Rock, Politics, Hippies, & Hipsters (10am, 4 hrs, $10, All Ages): The heart of NYC’s counter-culture, the Village is home to bohemians, punks, gays & hipsters. Visit the famous Washington Square Park & nightclubs where legends like Jimi Hendrix & the Ramones got their start. Great nightlife spots & souvenir shopping!
JERRY’S GRAND TOUR (11am, 13 hours, $10, All Ages): For those who can’t make it to his Saturday Grand Tour – you’re in luck! The ultimate New York experience: an all-you-can-see-in-NYC marathon tour! Start at the Brooklyn Bridge, visiting the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, Chinatown, Little Italy, Central Park, Times Square and more. (You can leave/join the tour at any point in the day!) Everyone’s favorite!
ED’S BRONX TOUR (10:00am, 3 hrs, $10, All Ages): Take a trip to Yankee Stadium, the home of NYC’s beloved baseball team, then go through Grand Concourse and get a taste of the Bronx’s thriving Puerto Rican Community.
HARLEM GOSPEL TOUR (6:00pm, 4 hrs, $10, All Ages): Take a tour of Harlem, followed by a visit to a Harlem Church in the heart of Gospel music mecca for a Wednesday-evening gospel service.
Harlem has a rich history and is in a period of renewal and revitalization right now. Visit the home of Alexander Hamilton, General Washington’s NY headquarters, the neighborhood of jazz great Duke Ellington and the site of Malcolm X’s assassination.

Take a tour Columbia University and St. John the Divine, followed by a visit to LaGree Baptist Church in the heart of 125th Street for a Sunday-morning gospel service.
Evening Activities, Events and Excursions
Only HI-New York brings the city to you every evening with fun activities that give you the chance to meet other travelers, and check out a bit of local culture. Special activities are always going on in addition to our regular events, so be sure to get a what’s happening info sheet in the lobby with an up-to-date list of all activities at the hostel.
PUB MONDAY NIGHTS AT JAKE’S (9 pm, Meet in the lobby, FREE, 21 and over): Go to one of the best local bars with an amazing drink special. Meet in the lobby and bring your ID.
COMEDY. POETRY. MUSIC WITH MAX (9:30pm, Theater, FREE, All Ages): This great show with stand-up, live music, and poetry readings are for all ages to enjoy every week.
PUB TUESDAYS NIGHT AT 3 SHEETS (10:45 pm, FREE, 21 and over): Join a fun group of hostel guests as we go to 3 Sheets Saloon. Tuesday night is $3 drafts and always a lot of fun to be had at a great bar.
FREE COOKIES & COMEDY WITH BILL AND TYLER (8:00pm, Theater, FREE, All Ages): Sweets and jokes are a great combination with Bill and Tyler’s comedy show every Wednesday night in the New York Room. Don’t miss all the laughs.
PUB NIGHT AT LION’S HEAD (9:30 pm, Meet in the lobby, FREE, 21 and over): Stay local as you go to one of best bars near the hostel. On Wednesday night, Lion’s Head has $1 drafts with inexpensive food. Meet a New Yorker or a local Columbia University Student.
ALL STAR COMEDY SHOW (9pm, Theater, FREE, All Ages): Laugh the evening away to the entertainment of 5 hilarious New York City standup comedians performing at HI-New York.
PUB CRAWL WITH CHRISTINA AND FRANKIE (9pm, FREE, 21 and over): Make some new friends as you go to some great local bars with excellent drinks special and start the weekend early with Christina and Frankie, these two volunteer guide alternate each week as leaders.
PUB CRAWL WITH BARBARA (9pm, Meet in the lobby, FREE, 21 and over): After a long weekend of partying, join Barbara, our volunteer guide, for a fun Sunday night at some local bars. Meet and make some new friends at our favorite local bars.
COMEDY SHOW WITH GIBRAN (9:30pm, Theater, FREE, All Ages): This great show with stand-up, live music, and poetry readings are for all ages to enjoy.
